Allison Switalski, a 17-year-old senior at Hill-McCLoy High School in Montrose, has been selected as the first recipient of the “Andrea Gianopoulos Memorial Scholarship”. This national scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is awarded by Fighting "4" Us, a non-profit organization started by Gianopoulos. It was Gianopoulos’s dream to promote awareness of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy(RSD) and raise funds for a cure. RSD is a chronic neurological syndrome characterized by severe burning pain, changes in bone and skin and extreme sensitivity to touch (RSDSA.org). After suffering with RSD for more than 14 years, Gianopoulos passed away on February 11, 2009 in Mexico where she had gone for a Ketamine coma procedure. The memorial scholarship is granted to an individual who “lives the fight against Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy every day while working toward educational goals”.
